One would say that leather bags and sustainable fashion can’t go hand-in-hand. The truth is there is a bit of a love/hate relationship between the two. Although leather by itself is a beautiful material and sustainable in the sense that it’s so strong and contemporary, unfortunately the conventional leather industry is far from eco-, people- and animal friendly.

But the good news is that there is a constant development going on in making sure that fashion items made of leather become healthier for people and the planet. At Charlie+Mary we use the term ‘eco-leather’ for leather that has been treated without the use of harmful chemicals like chromium IV, PCP and AZO dyes. Instead the leather is organically tanned. This adds to a cleaner and safer tanning process and reduces the carbon footprint.

Even though working with products made of eco leather is safer it still  doesn’t always mean that the production process has been healthy and fair for the people who made the products and for the animals the leather comes from. That is why we are very happy to work with a partner like O My Bag. This label from Amsterdam designs and produces the most beautiful leather bags and accessories. O My Bag’s collections are made of eco-leather that comes from locally sourced cowhides from cows that lived in the grasslands and died of natural causes. It is also a bag that gives people the chance for a better life. In the area of Kolkata, India. Every O My Bag is created with love, fair wages and benefits are paid and education and training is offered. Their video explains it all:

Another sustainable leather option if you ask us is ‘the second hand’ one as a good leather item can easily last several lifetimes.
